A control rod is used to stabilize a nuclear fission reactor. When placed adjacent to a reactor, it will halt all fission activity, allowing the reactor to cool at a very fast rate. The most efficient way to set one up is to attach it to a sticky piston, which in turn is wired to either a lever (for a manual shut down) or to a Thermometer block (for an automatic shut down when the reactor reaches a certain temperature). Thusly, when the redstone signal from either the Thermometer Block or lever reaches the sticky piston, it will push the control rod adjacent to the nuclear reactor, allowing it to cool down, preventing unwanted nuclear fallout.
